It seems as if wood joinery terms fly on the air at Vermont Timber Works even after the guys have taken pencils from ears and the doors have closed for the night. Consequently, I cannot help but learn a few terms myself, though I resist. (I'm in bookkeeping.) Here's my wood joinery repertoire...so far anyway:

Tongue (Now there's an easy one! It looks like a tongue.)

Shoulder (It's much like a human shoulder, well, one that will never rotate, ever again, once joined.)

Mort - Mortise and Tenon (How does one remember which part is the mortise and which is the tenon??? How many times have I asked Sandy? She's my source for anything 'shop' because she doesn't roll her eyes or sit back in her chair with an impatient expression when I ask dumb questions. Although, if I ask which is mortise and which is tenon, one more time, Sandy might clobber me or at least think me mentally deficient.

So I've devised a method. I think Mortimer instead of mortise, and I know that 'ol Mort has a hole in his head because that's how I picture him. Poor 'ol Mort.)

Dovetail (Easy. It describes itself perfectly. I, however, would have named this joinery, fishtail. But I can remember either.)

Doublemort (Just double poor 'ol Mort.)

I guess that wasn't too painful. I might learn a few more terms. Let them fly!

The New Guy

Being the new person at VTW has been a little easier than I was first expecting. The people in the office, and the timber framers out on the production floor have been great to work with. Having done sales, and having worked in the heavy timber business before, there seems to be this friendly atmosphere with the people who work in this field. Maybe it just takes a special person to hand hewn a beam, or cut a mortise and tenon joint by hand, or help a client visualize what their Great Room will look like. Right know I am just trying to take in all the knowledge that I can, and enjoy the great atmosphere that is here everyday when you walk through the doors at VTW.

Timber Framing in Vermont in Autumn...it's really tough to take the view. Don't you think so?

As the leaves change color and fall to the ground, our Vermont Timber Works crew is very busy. We are wrapping up a custom designed horse barn to be raised in Rockingham, VT. Hemlock timbers were chosen, do you know why?

Horses tend not to chew hemlock timbers as much as other wood species.

Sometimes I think that being in the business of sales is almost like being a waiter at a fine restaurant.

The primary focus is to make the customer happy, and to run yourself ragged trying to keep them that way.

I take orders every day....from clients, bosses, even the dogs. This person would like Steel Joinery instead of Traditional Joinery. Okay- no problem.
Another person will want the Harwood Pegs in the Joints to stick out and inch, instead of being flush with the Timber Trusses. Even the dogs bark their orders....Okay- One BISCUIT, coming right up!

I usually assume that when people ask me what I do for a living, and I answer that I work for Vermont Timber Works, everyone automatically knows exactly what that entails.

Recent news flash....
Everyone Does NOT know!

In a nutshell, here is a better description of what I do.

Clients, either from residential projects or large commercial jobs will call and ask us to give an estimate for a post and beam barn, a timber church, library trusses, hotel porte cochers, etc. We get a lot of requests for a myriad of projects.

We will take information from the potential buyer, such as the species of wood they are thinking of, as well as the wood finish- whether it be rough sawn or planed and chamfered- the type of joinery, the location of the build, and so on. Most of the time, a commercial job will already have a set of architectural prints to go by.

Once we have provided the estimate and the client agrees to purchase the timber frame, we begin the process of drawing preliminary shop drawings. These are sent back for approval by the contractor/client. Once approved, we order the materials and bring them to our shop to begin the fabrication process.

All of our post and beam projects are cut by hand. Even the mortise and tenon joinery is hand crafted by one of our skilled craftsmen.

After the timber barn, post and beam home, truss, whatever project it may be is assembled here in the shop- we ship it to the location of the build. Sometimes we just send the timbers and other times our crew travels to the job site to erect the frame. It's purely the choice of the project manager or home owner.

Once the timber frame is up- we're done! But of course following up with the client is essential. We want to make sure that they are happy with the end result. Of course the timber frame is the KEY ingredient to a beautiful building.

When deciding on what look you want in your timber frame home, it's always a good idea to have a few options for the truss design. Sometimes clients will think they know what they want, but it doesn't always work with the layout or floorplan for the home.

Most of the time, the joinery used in a residential project is Traditional style Mortise and Tenon joinery

but once in a while, someone will want the look of steel joinery.

How, If I might ask, is a Timber Frame made?

What exactly are the tricks of the trade?

*My Dear Mrs. Goose, please let me explain.

Our Timber Frames are Custom Built, no two are the same.

The Timber Beams arrive here in saw milled form,

and from those milled timbers, wondrous Post and Beam Houses are born.

The Heavy Timber Trusses, are they all cut by hand?

If I want to build, do I need archtiectural plans?

*Yes, Mrs. Goose, they are all hand cut by our crew.

Fabricated in our shop and shipped directly to you.

Architectural plans are a definite plus,

But if you have hand drawn sketches and can explain them to us,

we can do a rough estimate, based on your drawing, but of course we do engineering before we start sawing.

How long will it take to erect the timber frame?

Be it Douglas Fir or White Pine, are the lead times the same?

* Based on the species, some being native, some not,

we allow for the shipping in the lead time slot.

Normal approximation for a Vermont Timber Works Frame

is 12 to 14 weeks. All the lead times the same.

Can I just put Timber Accent Beams in certain rooms in my dwelling?

Over time will the Beams shrink, or should I anticipate them swelling?

* Timber is a ntural product, and over time will start checking

with the exception, of course, of the floor and roof decking.

As Timber dries out, it may shrink ever so slighlty,

but our mortise and tenon joinery will always fit tightly.

If I wanted a Timber Barn or a Timber Church on the side,

is this something that Vermont Timber Works could provide?

*Of course we can build Timber Churches and Post and Beam Barn Frames.

If you've been considering building a Timber Frame Home, or using Heavy Timber to dress up your existing residence, Vermont Timber Works can help.

Building with Heavy Timber is very different than building with conventional methods, and sometimes clients aren't exactly sure what to expect when inquiring about a Timber Frame.

Here are a few quick tips that I'm hoping will help to enlighten you before you get started.

When Calling to inquire about a Timber Frame, whether for a heavy timber home, a Post and Beam Barn, a commercial project, or even just a few decorative trusses, be prepared to learn that from start to finish, the process of purchasing a timber frame and receiving the final product generally takes about 12-14 weeks.

Also, please keep in mind that the tools and the fabrication process for building with Heavy Timber are very different than conventional framing, and that the costs cannot be compared "apples to apples". If you have a budget that doesn't allow for a complete Heavy Timber Frame, perhaps a few Timber Accents would add a certain new flare to your project. We'd be happy to suggest a truss design for your Great Room or Kitchen.

Just yesterday, our crew at Vermont Timber Works started fabricating a "tower" or a "cupola" for the top of the Grange Hall in Ferrisburgh, VT.

If you follow the link above for the Grange Hall, and look at the pictures, you will see a heavy timber Bell Tower drawn atop the old Structure.

Can you see the resemblance?

This building is approximately 138 years old, and in need of major renovations.

Vermont Timber Works was chosen to be part of this restoration project by the General Contractor, Bread Loaf Corp., and are pleased to be able to showcase our talents through this Rough Sawn Hemlock ,Post and Beam Structure that will adorn the Grange Hall for years to come.

Timber Truss Styles

A King Post or Queen Post Truss is among the most common style, but if you are looking for something a little more detailed, there's always the Hammer Beam Truss or the Scissor Truss.

Okay,

Perhaps not diamonds, but we DO have a "Ruby".

Faithful mascot, official welcoming committee, and keeper of the gate, Ruby is Vermont Timber Works' best friend.

But let's not forget about Kramer, our other fearless companion.
Kramer is also a favorite amongst VTW's daily crew.

Whether they are supervising the fabrication process in the workshop, directing the trucks bringing shipments of Heavy Timber to our yard, assisting the Sales Staff, or breaking for lunch,

they are always around here somewhere.

Don't get me wrong, it doesn't mean that Vermont Timber Works has "gone to the dogs", but it wouldn't be the same without them.

(Just ask the Fed-Ex guy!)

We are presently awaiting a contract on a barn in San Francisco, and just contracted some Heavy Timber Accents for a home in Paget, Bermuda.

We receive daily calls and inquiries from all over the country, and an occasional call from countries outside of the U.S.

Happy New Year.

It's the second day of 2008, and it looks like we're off to a great start here at Vermont Timber Works.

The workshop is full, the jobs are rolling in, and we're BUSY!

As of right now, we are working on Spruce Camp-a Ski Lodge that will be located in Stowe, VT,
preparing to ship trusses for a church* in MA, fabricating three Trellises for the Broward County Fire Staions in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, finishing Clay Pit Pond- a Welcome Center *in Staten Island, NY, and preparing to ship Lake Taconic Visitor Center in Taconic NY.
(Just to name a few).

If you're driving North on I-91, just inside of the Vermont Border, you will notice the Vermont Welcome Center.

This is one of my favorite projects from Vermont Timber Works.

The Main Building is a hand hewn Easten White Pine Timber Frame, and the Picnic Shelter and Information Crib are of hand hewn White Oak.

Inside, you will find that the Center is set up like a mini-museum with displays and trivial tidbits about Vermont. There are also computer stations that link to various Chambers of Commerce.
You'll find informative brochures and helpful hints on making your Vermont Visit an unforgettable one. Of course, there is information about Vermont Timber Works readily available.

These next picture show the roof rafters being flown in by the crane, and the frame coming together in the final stages of the raising.

This frame has generated a variety of calls from Passers-by.
Travelers will stop to stretch at the Welcome Center, and will later call Vermont Timber Works to inquire about perhaps obtaining a Timber Frame for themselves.

The quality is undeniably top-shelf, and the Timber Frame is as welcoming as the Center it's housing.

With a product like this, it's going to be beautiful, no matter where you use it.

These photos are of a delivery of Solid White Pine Tongue and Groove Decking that was shipped to Vermont Timber Works.

Although Vermont Timber Works does not install the decking, we offer our sourcing and supplying services to our clients.

A good example of what using wood decking on a ceiling would be the Hawthorne Suites Hotel in Burlington, VT. It just wouldn't look the same if it were finished with sheetrock.

Who's up for a little Post and Beam Brainteaser?

Don't worry, it's a blog- you won't be graded, and nobody will have a clue what your answers were. This is just for fun.

Before I started at Vermont Timber Works, I probaly wouldn't have done very well.

Ready?

1) What is the most common type of joinery used in timber framing?

a. Nail and Peg

b. Mortise and Tenon

c. Tenon and Peg

If you answered b, Mortise and Tenon, give yourself a round of applause. This type of joint is used to fasten connectors, posts, collar ties, struts, etc.

2) What is a SLICK used for?

a. To coat the timbers with an oily substance before milling

b. To hoist the timbers from the ground during the erection process

c. To clean the surface of a Hand Hewn Beam

C is the correct answer. A SLICK is used to clean the surface of a beam after it's been hand hewn. Hand Hewing is making notches in the wood by individual hard blows of a heavy cutting tool, such as an adze or chisel. Hand hewn timbers offer a very traditional look.

3) What wood species is the STRONGEST of the following?

a. Hemlock

b. Western Red Cedar

c. Douglas Fir

Did you say Hemlock? If so, you were not correct.

The correct answer is Douglas Fir. We get our Douglas Fir from the West Coast. Our Timber is always #1 Grade or Better, unless otherwise specified.

Star of Bethlehem?

No...Not quite.

Shining example of our craftsmanship?

We like to think so.

The Picture above is the view of the Timber Framed Cupola, looking straight up from the alter of the Bethlehem Monastery of the Poor Clares in Barhamsville, VA.

This cupola was flown in with a crane, and the top of the structure reaches about 45' high.

This cupola is just one small detail in this intricate frame. This 3D rendering of the Monastery shows the complexity of the project from the inside out.

After the rasing, it's amazing how the drawings seem to come alive.

This frame is made of Douglas Fir, and consists of over 31,000 board feet of Heavy Timber.

The Joinery is mostly of traditional style Mortise and Tenon, with some steel as required.

Both the interior of the Sanctuary

and the Alter area show Arched Beams that add so much character and unique detail to this beautiful building.

The finished product is nothing short of amazing.

Although not a celestial body, or a navigational beacon, a Timber Frame from Vermont Timber Works is the BRIGHTEST idea of all.

A Horse is a Horse, Of Course- Of Course.....

But it's a LUCKY Horse who gets to reside in a Barn like THIS!

This is the Osprey Horse Barn on Martha's Vineyard. It's a custom designed Barn of Rough Sawn Hemlock Timbers and Traditional Mortise and Tenon Joinery.

* Did you know that when building a Horse Barn, it's best to use Hemlock, as for some reason, it's the one type of wood the horses don't like to nibble on?

Even the hay loft is a post and beam masterpiece. But if the horses are spoiled enough to live in such a beautiful barn, I guess we would only expect the food storage to be top "notch"...(No wood related pun intended).

Forget vivsions of Sugar Plums- why not dream about something even sweeter? Like the thought of being surrounded daily by a beautiful post and beam home? A place where the Sugar Plums will dream of visiting, and perhaps staying a little longer this year.

The Schmidt Werks Residence in Darien, CT. is a fine example of the exquisite handiwork produced by Vermont Timber Works.

This Hand Hewn Eastern White Pine Timber Frame with Traditional Mortise and Tenon Joinery was featured on the cover of House Beautiful Magazine.

So in your letter to Santa this year, why not ask him to bring you what you REALLY want?

He'll know where to fill your request. After all, Vermont Timber Works is Santa's OTHER workshop.

Just "Checking"....

If you've ever been into a Timber Framed Building, be it a home, a church, a school, etc., you may have noticed the different areas where the frame appears to have CRACKED. This is NOT because the wood species chosen was less than perfect, or because it was damaged during installation. Wood is a natural product, and this process called "checking" is normal, and to be expected.

A "Check" is a long crack that appears as the sap wood of a timber shrinks around the heart wood over time.
Checking is not a structural problem, and usually occurs only on one or two sides of a beam. Oak, however, can have surface checks everywhere, which many people feel add to the beautiful rustic appearance of a timber frame.

Other than the appearance of these "cracks", you may notice that certain areas of the wood seem to be seperating, or pulling away from each other.

Shake is the separation of the rings in a piece of wood that occurs as it dries. The wood can also 'peel' off around the rings, similar to the layers of an onion.

I hope this has helped give you a better understanding of why a Timber frame may appear to be less than perfect, but if it was built by Vermont Timber Works, please rest assured that it is as perfect as can be.

But if you are anything like me, you find yourself wishing you could empty the contents of your home to allow for a large enough area to entertain all of your friends and family at once.

This barn was built with Heavy Timbers that weathered outsied of our shop for 6 months to create an antique look. It appears as though the barn has been standing there for years.

While mingling with friends and family, Jack is also surrounded by the beautiful quality craftsmanship of a custom built Timber Frame, a timeless conversation piece of its own.

Decorating with a twist.....

It seems that this time of year brings about an innate desire to Decorate...
Cornucopias over-flowing with gourds and festive accents, Giant Globes containing Penguins and waving Santas, Icicle lights on every house for miles.

After a relatively quiet summer here at Vermont Timber Works, the change of the seasons has brought about a change of pace.
Projects are coming out of the WOODWORK. (No pun intended.)

We are currently working on Spruce Camp, a resort lodge at Stowe, VT, Olana Wagon House in Hudson, NY, and a Private Residence in Lake Raponda, VT...to name a few.

Next up, we will erect an outdoor obsevatory building near Boston, MA called the Blue Hills Trailside Museum, and are preparing to ship a project as far as Bermuda.

As busy as we may be, we welcome new projects and the challenge of turning them around ahead of schedule.

Recently, Vermont Timber Works was contracted to build frame for a new ski lodge in Stowe , Vermont. This is going to be a beautiful building, with some massive beams that run continuously through the structure.

I knew that the timbers were going to be large, at a 52' span, of course they would be, but I had no idea that the would look as big as they did when they arrived at our shop.

After seeing what can be done using these timber members, I believe that no idea is too big or too difficult. The resources are there, and we can harness them....

So when you are dreaming up your timber frame, remember to dream big!

I had a gentleman ask me yesterday if all of our KITS were exactly the same, or if he could buy a different version.
I was pleased to be able to tell him that Vermont Timber Works does NOT make Timber Kits, but designs, hand cuts and builds every frame from raw materials. We don't use machines to do the work for us.
Each Timber Frame is custom built by the small group of talented craftsmen here at our facility.

I have to admit that before I started working for Vermont Timber Works, I admired the look of post and beam, but never realized how much detail and hard work went into every aspect of the frame.
After being hired, I was able to go and help erect a hand crafted barn, and I have a new found appreciation for the trade.
